For doctors moving from abroad, the practical sequence can include Irish Medical Council registration, work permission where required and agreement on the appointment grade. Doctors already in Ireland may be more focused on autonomy, service development or a change in working pattern.

Irish Medical Council registration should be checked early.
Doctors must be registered with the Irish Medical Council in the division appropriate to the post. Consultant and specialist appointments may require entry in the Specialist Division for Psychiatry.
