The working market
Working as a Psychiatrist in the UK
Private psychiatry work can take several forms.
UK opportunities may sit within independent hospitals, specialist clinics, outpatient services or a portfolio spanning employed and sessional work. The useful questions are often practical: patient group, responsible-clinician duties, on-call expectations, administrative support and how much clinical autonomy the role carries.
International psychiatrists may need to establish GMC registration, specialist status and right to work. Doctors already practising in the UK may instead be comparing service quality, working pattern or the scope to build a more focused portfolio.
