City or regional Australia?
Where you work in Australia can affect far more than your commute.
Patient population, clinical breadth, team structure, housing, travel and the types of opportunities available can differ substantially between metropolitan and regional locations.
Major-city practice
Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth offer different hospital, primary-care and specialist networks. Within each metropolitan area, a practice’s catchment, referral relationships, appointment structure and patient demand matter more than a city label. Compare the actual commute, home and school locations as well as the clinical role.
Sydney combines coastal and suburban areas with very different housing and travel patterns. Melbourne has extensive cultural and educational facilities, but home-to-work and school journeys still require careful planning. Brisbane and South East Queensland provide urban and coastal options; Perth’s distance from eastern cities and family overseas may affect travel plans.
Regional centres and rural services
Regional centres can offer a different mix of hospital, community and private practice. Smaller teams may cover wider catchments, with longer journeys, a broader clinical remit or different specialist referral and after-hours arrangements. None of those features can be assumed for every regional job: ask about the specific service.
Rural or remote practice may involve more substantial travel distances, smaller local service networks and a different balance of in-person and remote support. Establish senior cover, peer support, telehealth, transfer pathways, leave cover and expectations for on-call work before judging the fit.
Workforce classification is a separate question
A location’s Distribution Priority Area status affects Medicare access for certain overseas-trained GPs under section 19AB; it is not simply a measure of how rural a place feels. The government locator provides DPA, District of Workforce Shortage and remoteness information for a specific address. Classifications can change, so check the intended workplace and the doctor’s circumstances at the time of a real offer.

Housing, schools and household costs
Compare the cost and availability of suitable housing near the workplace, school or childcare options, commuting and other household costs with the actual remuneration package. The ABS reported a 5.0% rise in the Housing component of its Consumer Price Index in the year to July 2026, including a 3.6% rise in rents. Those historical rates describe price changes, not the rent of a suitable home in any particular area.
Government-school fees or eligibility can depend on the state and visa status. New South Wales, for example, publishes fees and exemptions for some temporary residents. Check the actual school and admissions conditions before making a housing commitment.

Choose the role and the place together
Ask about the team, clinical breadth, patient population, work pattern, pay model, referral access and supervision alongside housing, transport, schools and access to healthcare. A metropolitan role and a regional role with the same title may lead to very different working and family lives.
The relevant comparison is between real appointments and destinations that work for the doctor and their household. An appealing location cannot compensate for a poorly defined role, and a strong role still needs a workable relocation plan.
